I recently spent a day in Biddeford at the Project AWARE summer film institute. Sounds fun, right? It was. But it was also so very inspiring.
Project AWARE is one of the MaineFocus partners this year and is working specifically with our Drug Abuse team to plan a film festival. Students around the state are being asked to create films based on the prompt, “How has drug abuse affected your life or the lives of people around you?” We’re calling it our Maine Focus Film Festival and it is scheduled for the same weekend as the February high school basketball tournament.
The film institute students volunteered to create a promotional film that will live here on the MaineFocus site and hopefully be shown elsewhere to increase interest in our project.
Whether we were talking about personal experiences with drugs or ideas they think other students will respond to, every teen I talked with was full of ideas and a desire to address this issue with their peers. I truly believe these students will not only amaze us with their talents, but they will be active members of a community determined to stop drug use and sexual violence while paving the way to a viable future for Maine.
Watch MaineFocus in the coming weeks for the promo film, and spread the news about the film festival – the more submissions we receive, the better.
