Spruce Run – Womancare Alliance, others walk to end abuse

Advocates, victim-survivors and area residents young and old, gathered Thursday for a walk through downtown Bangor in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness month. Decked in purple, the color of domestic violence awareness efforts, participants of the third annual event wound their way through lunchtime crowds, starting and finishing at West Market Square.

Small bouquets in mason jars lined a table at the square, each with the name of  someone who lost his or her life in a domestic violence homicide in Maine this year. Among them, the most recent, April Haskell, who was allegedly stabbed to death in Old Town earlier this month.

The event was organized by The Spruce Run – Womancare Alliance, a new partnership of two organizations – Bangor-based Spruce Run and Dover-Foxcroft-based Womancare. Several other events were held throughout October, including a similar walk in Guilford.
