Addiction and recovery for women conference scheduled Sept. 6

Husson University’s Institute for Continuing Health Education Programming will host University of California, Los Angeles integrated substance abuse program professor, Christine Grella at an addiction and recovery for women conference Sept. 6.

Grella will share the results of her latest research about chemical dependence and gender differences in substance abuse trends, according to a news release about the event.

Women often enter treatment for substance abuse sooner than men, however, according to Grella’s research, they usually face more psychological distress battles including mood and anxiety disorders.

Alanna S. Stetson, director for the Husson institute, said the conference is a chance for the community to learn about and discuss solutions to the issues women face when overcoming addiction.

“The exchange of information and ideas taking place at this event between prominent prevention, mental health, treatment and recovery professionals could have a significant impact on efforts to improve the outcomes of women at risk,” Stetson said in a statement.

Additional speakers at the conference will include Donna M. White, an addiction specialist at Lemuel Shattuck Hospital in Boston, and Andrew M. Mead, associate justice for the Maine Supreme Judicial Court who also serves as the presiding judge for the Penobscot County Adult Drug Treatment Court.

Tuition for the event is $120 per person and a group discount is available for organizations sending three or more people. The conference will run from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 6 at the Hilton Garden Inn in Bangor.

Interested participants should register or request more information by contacting Stetson at 207-992-1973 or via email at stetsona@my.husson.edu.
